Happy half-Icelandic pop from Salzburg

Artist: Chili and the Whalekillers | Single: Turn

We must admit that this is the first Austrian/Icelandic band we have ever heard of. Chili and the Whalekillers not only have a highly unlikely name (if you disregard the fact that the singer’s actual name is Chili Tomasson and that Icelanders in some countries mainly are known for being whalekillers) they also met, play and live in Salzburg, otherwise mostly famous for it’s baroque architecture and being the town where Mozart was born.

These guys recently popped up in the Icelandic radio charts – seemingly out of nowhere – with a song called Turn. A fantastic little  jangle pop gem that instantly made us very happy. This upbeat song’s inspiration from traditional ’60s-style guitar pop overlaid with soul vocals is perfectly enhanced by the beautiful video directed by Florinda Frisardi. The visuals gather all the common denominators between Iceland and Austria: Mountains, blue lake water and well-groomed beards. What more can you ask for?
